Over 150 artists contribute to the Artmarket which is housed in the original Waitekauri Miners Union Hall moved to Waihi in 1903 and a very important building to the town historically. Furniture made by Wayne Pratt from recycled native timber is a new feature at the Artmarket and sits beautifully alongside wooden pieces crafted from old timber recovered from the Martha Mine which can still be seen being worked at the top end of Waihi’s main street. The timber is from mining days of old. The handmade jewellery range, including recycled gold pieces by Charlotte Jane and Steam Punk Jewellery, who make pieces using vintage watch faces and add a modern twist, keeps growing with something for everyone and every occasion. Greenstone, quartz, paua and other precious New Zealand gems make up a great selection of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. A new range of glassware is simply stunning with gorgeous pohutukawa and silver fern patterns as are the delicate porcelain bowls by Jo Luping and tiles by Jenz of Tauranga. Visitors should remember to go into the art gallery in the centre of the store and see which local artists have an exhibition going on and wander out the back and see the great garden ornaments, pottery and unexpected pieces of garden art to be found amongst the fernery. Kaylene says the Artmarket has it all and then some. “We have recently got in a great range of Great Barrier Island Bee skin care products all made of natural ingredients,” she says. The Artmarket is open seven days a week and the friendly staff are more than happy to gift-wrap purchases. Real pieces of New Zealand art A treasure trove of New Zealand-made arts and crafts, giftware and jewellery awaits visitors to the Waihi Artmarket.
