You can also catch the train in Waihi and ride out to Waikino as a start to your experience walking or riding the beautiful tracks the gorge has to offer. Volunteers from Goldfields Railway Incorporated have been maintaining and operating this wonderful service for many years giving pleasure to thousands of visitors to the region. The 6.5km track between Waikino and Waihi is the last of the historic line opened in 1905 which passes over farmland, through cuttings hewn from solid rock, crosses two rivers and has the only private rail bridge over a state highway in New Zealand. From Waihi the Goldfields train delivers you to the Waikino Station, originally the Paeroa Station, which contains the Station Cafe. Check out the photographic display and maps of the area before taking the short walk or bike ride to the beginning of the Karangahake Gorge Experience starting with the Victoria Battery on the south bank of the Ohinemuri River. The battery offers displays, an underground kiln tour and small gauge train rides. You can also explore the massive foundations and remains of the cyanide tanks which were used to process the ore from the Martha Mine in Waihi. A guided tour of this area can be arranged with the Victoria Battery Tramway Society volunteers. You can then continue along the path of the original rail corridor towards Karangahake and through the old railway tunnel and down across the old railway bridge. Take a left turn and walk back up the trail to the hidden treasures of the Windows Walk and through the tunnels of the miners where they dug their way to gold. All aboard for the Goldfields train The experience of a lifetime waits for you in the beautiful Karangahake Gorge – a train ride from Waikino to Waihi and back again. HISTORIC SIGHTS: The combination of historic mining sites and beautiful scenery makes the Goldfields train ride a must.
