OPEN 7 DAYS Over the past few decades Paeroa has earned its recognition of being the Antique Town of New Zealand, a name that had its start by one of the town’s many ‘get-on-and-do-it’ people - Viv Gerrand. Viv, who has owned a store in Paeroa for many years selling antiques, collectables and memorabilia, says placing the signs at each entrance to Paeroa was the best thing done to get Paeroa on the antique hunters’ maps. “Even though some have changed hands the number of shops selling antiques and collectables seems to stay the same year after year as it has a great reputation with shoppers,” she says. With more than nine shops with names like Granville’s, Pioneer House, Antiques on Main and Time Traveller selling antiques and collectables it’s a great place to come and browse on the weekends to find that special treasure you have been looking for. With shops specialising in watches and jewellery, vintage clothing, furniture and bric-a -brac through to Arkwright’s Antiques where the sheer amount of items displayed in this shop will keep you busy poking around for hours, Paeroa is the place to look out for that unusual gift or collectable. Viv says with most antiques now being sold online, Paeroa is the place to head to find treasures from the past in reality. “Paeroa offers the real thing, not just a picture and description, we are open seven days a week and offer friendly personal service both to buyers and sellers – we are always on the lookout for a bargain ourselves,” she says. For one weekend in September the whole town turns back the clock with an Antiques Weekend with a Vintage and Classic Car Parade down the main street on the Saturday culminating in Wharf St where an old fashioned tea party with Devonshire scones with jam and cream reign supreme. Old fashioned games like stilt walking and marbles are played by children while the grown-ups check out the over 70 vintage cars on display before heading out around the region on a Mystery Car Rally. The Antique Town of New Zealand On any given weekend during summer visitors to Paeroa will see many antiques, second-hand and collectable items lined up in front of the many antique stores the town boasts.
