Dive Zone Whitianga is a PADI 5 Star
Instructor Development Centre and an
approved delivery site of the Academy
of Diving Trust (NZQA Registered). Dive
Zone offers a unique opportunity to gain
nationally and internationally recognised
qualifications enabling graduates to work
in the dive and outdoor tourism industry.
Current student, Katrina Brider, a
mother of three, traded in an administra-
tion job to pursue her love for diving.
Raised in Rarotonga where she learnt to
dive, Katrina began working on her Dive
Master course on a part-time basis last
year before deciding to take the plunge
and gain her full Instructor qualifications,
undertaking the full-time Wilderness
Adventure Tourism Diploma course at the
beginning of this year.
Katrina has thrived on both the aca-
demic and practical sides to the course.
With a keen sense of the importance
of looking after our underwater world,
Katrina would like to use her training to
work with children. She believes that kids
are our worlds’ future and showing them
the world beneath the sea is the first
step in teaching them how to look after
it. Katrina has a gained a huge sense of
satisfaction from achieving the challenges
presented through the year.
“I wouldn’t have got to this point in my
life without the guidance and teaching
from the crew at Dive Zone,” she said.
Ceri Parr, Director of Kip McGrath Education Centre in Thames answers some frequently
1. Can you help my child? The number one question. First I like to assess a potential new
student, to see their current level of achievement, to see any gaps or any strengths. Then
discuss with both parent and child, about what we can offer to remediate, strengthen or
extend . Each student has an individual educational program.
2. When does my child finish at Kip McGrath? How long is a piece of string? Students
are provided with professional tutoring until their goal is reached – this may take two
terms, two years, or more, depending on individual needs. Sometimes it may be a case of
coming to Kip McGrath every year for a term or so, just to keep on top.
3. What subjects do you teach? We specialise in the essential areas of maths and
numeracy, reading, spelling and general literacy.
4. What age can my child come? Our oldest student are in their 20s, working at
University level, our youngest are preschoolers. Most are in years 2-10, with some NCEA
students for English and Maths.
